The project, which has been in the planning and preparation stages for weeks, officially kicked off on November 11th, coinciding with National Afforestation Day.
Mayor Soner Yeşildaş, in his statement about the project, highlighted the importance of addressing the region's water scarcity issue while also taking proactive steps within the town's capabilities. He said, "While we are working to draw attention to the water shortage problem in our area, we are also making efforts with the resources available to us. Our afforestation efforts are among the foremost of these initiatives. Using National Afforestation Day as an opportunity, we have started a major afforestation project across the town. We began planting Mavi Selvi and Plane trees that we sourced from Hatay. We plan to plant approximately 5,000 saplings as part of this project. Additionally, we will be enhancing the parks in the town center with ornamental plants, trees, and myrtle to make them greener and more aesthetically pleasing."
The afforestation work is also taking place along a 5-kilometer stretch of road at the entrance of Akçaşehir from Karaman, with trees being planted on both sides. Mayor Yeşildaş emphasized, "Our goal is to create not just a green Akçaşehir, but an Akçaşehir surrounded by greenery. We wish our town the best of luck with this project."
